Lacey. 22. Calgary. Archaeologist by day, singer/songwriter by night. Strange fascination with elephants and old movies. Absolutely loathes moths.

All kinds of women are the victims of sexual assault. Sex workers. Nuns. College students. Little girls. Old women. Women who have had no sexual partners and women who have had 100. Women who are walking alone at night and women who thought they were safe in their own beds. Women who wear headscarves and women who wear miniskirts.

Very few men, on the other hand, are rapists, but the small number who are tend to sexually assault a lot of women.

So why are we so interested in what a victim did, or what she looks like, or what her sexual history is? None of that makes her more or less likely to be assaulted. The scary truth is that women are raped because they had the bad luck of being stuck in a room with a rapist.

Don’t date a girl who reads because girls who read are the storytellers. You with the Joyce, you with the Nabokov, you with the Woolf. You there in the library, on the platform of the metro, you in the corner of the café, you in the window of your room. You, who make my life so god damned difficult. The girl who reads has spun out the account of her life and it is bursting with meaning. She insists that her narratives are rich, her supporting cast colorful, and her typeface bold. You, the girl who reads, make me want to be everything that I am not. But I am weak and I will fail you, because you have dreamed, properly, of someone who is better than I am. You will not accept the life that I told of at the beginning of this piece. You will accept nothing less than passion, and perfection, and a life worthy of being storied. So out with you, girl who reads. Take the next southbound train and take your Hemingway with you. I hate you. I really, really, really hate you.

So avoid using the word ‘very’ because it’s lazy. A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. Don’t use very sad, use morose. Language was invented for one reason, boys - to woo women - and, in that endeavour, laziness will not do. It also won’t do in your essays.

Print will never die. There’s no substitute for the feel of an actual book. I adore physically turning pages, and being able to underline passages and not worrying about dropping them in the bath or running out of power. I also find print books objects of beauty.

Tag, you're it!

Here are the rules:

Each tagged person must post ten things about themselves. You have to choose and tag ten people . Go to their blogs and tell them you tagged them. No tag backs!

Oh gosh! 10 things. Okay, here goes.

01. I love school, but I am so excited for it to end. I can’t wait to get out there, and do something different!

02. My current obsession is Gilmore Girls. Wait, did I say current? I mean pretty much for the last 11 years.

03. I hate that every thing I do for me takes me further away from so many awesome people. What wouldn’t I give for a week back in Lethbridge or Oakville to catch up with everyone?! Also, I suck at long distance anything.

04. I am such a nerd. About two months ago, I built a blanket fort in my living room, and sat and played board games and Magic: The Gathering with my boyfriend. Because really, we are 6.

05. I love having secret projects. Right now I have a big secret music project that I’m working on, and I’m super excited about it. The last time I did anything music-wise just by myself, I was still in high school.

06. I have this weird thing about elephants. I love them. My apartment is cluttered with little elephant knick-knacks. Salt and pepper shakers, a cake pan, you name it - the newest is an elephant tea pot.

07. I have two cats. Scout I’ve had for 7 years, Kingsley only for a few months. Scout is a very graceful elegant cat, whereas Kingsley is ridiculously silly.

08. I’m dying to go back to Israel once I graduate. I plan to spend a semester there before starting my masters.

09. People get so confused by my name. The main reason for this, is I constantly get stuck with various nicknames - Mouse, Tilly, Little Lacey. I’ll answer to just about anything these days.

10. Tea is my life. I always have a cup nearby. I swear, where most people have blood, I have tea.
